Open measurement standard

The Nooscope

A standard for measuring how richly a system responds when it is perturbed, and a register of every reading taken under it, failures included.

The atlas: a human cortex and a mouse brain rendered as lit point clouds, each issued reading placed where it was recorded and colored by its value.
Every issued reading, on the brain it was taken from, lit by its value. The cortex surface is measured anatomy; where a reading sits on it is schematic, because no deposit publishes electrode positions. Open the atlas to spin it, choose a state and watch a perturbation travel, or fail to.
The object of measurement. A system is perturbed at time zero; its response across the window is compared with its own baseline. Windows shown are the standard's TMS-EEG parameter set.

What a reading is

A reading is not a number. It is a record with a number in it: the value, its interval, the scale it belongs to, how it was recorded, the floor the same recording returns when nothing was done, and every condition of the standard it meets or fails. The reference computation is the state-transition perturbational complexity index, PCIST, specified in full so it can be reimplemented from the text alone.

Readings on different scales are never mixed. Readings taken at different grain, in space or in time, are never compared without saying so.

A reading never states whether anything is, or is not, conscious. Not for a person, an animal, a tissue or a machine. Not now, not later.

Where the register stands

Every reading is published with its failures on its face, and the conformance count is published at zero because that is the only way its rise will mean anything.

The documents

Everything the register rests on is published here in full, and every figure on these pages is rendered from the file it comes from.
